With a winter storm watch in effect for most of north Georgia, it’s time to prepare your home for the snow, sleet, and freezing rain expected from Friday through early Saturday.
These conditions can cause significant damage, leading to costly insurance claims, particularly from burst pipes and water line breakage. Here are some essential tips to help you prevent water damage:
•
Shut Off Water Valves
Knowing how to shut off your water valves is crucial in preventing extensive water damage in case of burst pipes.
Here are the steps:
1. Locate Your Main Water Shut-Off Valve: This is usually found where the main water line enters your home, often in the basement, crawl space, or utility room.
2. Turn Off the Valve: If you have a gate valve (wheel-shaped), turn it clockwise until it stops. If you have a ball valve (lever-shaped), turn the lever 90 degrees to the right.
3. Shut Off Individual Valves: For specific areas, locate the shut-off valves near sinks, toilets, and water heaters. Turn these valves clockwise to stop the water flow.
4. Turn Off the Water at the Meter: If you need to shut off the water at the meter, locate the meter box near the sidewalk or curb. Remove the cover, find the valve in front of the meter, and use a crescent wrench to turn the valve perpendicular to the water line.
•
Inside the House:
1. Keep your thermostat set to at least 55°F, even when you’re not home.
2 . Insulate exposed pipes and open cabinet doors to allow warmer air to circulate around the plumbing.
3. Let a small stream of water flow from faucets connected to vulnerable pipes to prevent freezing.
4 . Seal any gaps or cracks that allow cold air to reach water lines, especially in unheated areas like garages and basements.
•
Outside the House:
1. Ensure the cover of your water meter is securely closed to prevent freezing.
2. Disconnect and store garden hoses and cover outdoor faucets with insulating materials.
3. Drain and winterize your lawn irrigation system and protect any exterior pumps for pools or fountains.
What to Do When a Pipe Bursts
Despite your best efforts, sometimes pipes can still burst. Here’s what to do if it happens:
Step 1: Immediately shut off the main water valve to prevent further damage.
Step 2: Open all faucets to drain the remaining water from the pipes.
Step 3: Identify the location of the burst pipe and assess the damage.
Step 4: Contact a licensed plumber to repair the burst pipe and inspect for additional damage.
Step 5: Take photos and document the damage for insurance purposes.
Step 6: Begin the cleanup process to prevent mold and further damage. Use towels, mops, and wet/dry vacuums to remove standing water.
